House of Blues looking to update facade
Good morning, #Cleveland! I’ll be tweeting out today’s Cleveland Landmarks Commission meeting for @cledocumenters at 9 am. Here’s the meeting stream on the Commission’s YouTube channel, you can watch for yourself here://twitter.com/hashtag/CLEdocumenters)
07:17 AM Nov 10, 2022 CST

Think we got something wrong? Send any enquiries on the meeting or these tweets to @cledocumenters or email us at cledocumenters@gmail.com

Here’s the agenda, and cheers to whoever designs and writes this thing for the Landmarks Commission. The names & associations of each guest are listed in the agenda so the viewing public won’t have to guess who they are:

This is cool, too. They also add a link to all the presentations that will be given. 😮

The first 6 cases are all for Certificates of Appropriateness, which always makes me giggle. I think the @CityofCleveland should also do Certificates of Appropriateness for people, you know half of us would never get to the table.👋🏻 https://t.co/ygllN6qwBI

Scott Kapp of @HOBCleveland is explaining plans to update the facade on E. 4th St. https://t.co/gGYCC1yf5k

Here’s an idea of what the 4th St. entrance will look like. https://t.co/iaqzEgK9jE

We’re getting a history of the aesthetics of the area now from the Cleveland Restoration Society’s Jessica Beam. https://t.co/WXvcy3iQ4a

Commission Chair Julie Trott asks for questions but there are none, just a few voices of support. The roll is called and the project is unanimously approved.

The next project up is new signage for a West Side daycare. https://t.co/PH4qrC0k6G

Here’s the Brooklyn Centre’s current signage rules to ensure the daycare’s sign meets these requirements including shape and color criteria. (didn’t know rules like that existed? 🤷🏻♀️) https://t.co/kc6ep306Fo

This project is approved with the requirement that the sign be moved centrally over the door, not the whole windowspace.

This is a home renovation and window installation on Franklin Blvd. https://t.co/MNKfJpXnSC

Case #3, a home in the Ludlow Historic District on Becket Rd. has been withdrawn. No reason was given.

@CityofCleveland Mgr. of Architecture & Site Development Carter Edman has concerns about the dark grey house colour, says it’s “trending now” but may be “a regrettable choice” in the future. https://t.co/sb9Yp5zEHn

Commission member Michele Anderson agrees about the colour, says she has concerns about the dark grey being too drab. City Planner Karl Brunjes says the city will be working with the owner & renovators on selecting colours.

Here’s what the home looks like now. 👇🏻 https://t.co/AK9t6itssp

The Commission unanimously approves the Franklin Blvd. project with conditions on the home railings and the final colour choice.

The next project is a mural on the Shoreway Building on W. 76th St. https://t.co/IS4NxZmdK3

Meet the artist who will be creating the mural. 👇🏻 https://t.co/sACeo0kJdh

Here’s the proposed mural and it’s meaning. What do you think? https://t.co/RKJ1FL8PUG

Several Commission members are speaking in support of this mural project, including Anderson and City Planning Director Joyce Huang.

Adam Comer of J Roc Developments is explaining how the company addressed community concerns with renovations to the Shoreway Building for their final design submittal.

For example, they added an indoor courtyard for residents & their dogs to help avoid added dog use of nearby neighbors’ green spaces. https://t.co/Y9RU9c0jNZ

Here’s all the facade materials to be used: https://t.co/tSxNW1C6uJ

And the parking has been moved underneath the building, resolving parking concerns for current residents on W. 76th and 78th.

Commission member Allan Dreyer says he does not like the roof, and that it looks unfinished. https://t.co/hMicwbWe1x

Anderson asks about a lake view as she feels that may be an incentive for people to move in, but the trees belong to the Metroparks, it would have to be their decision. https://t.co/yCxoEjcqWK

Anderson says she’s hesitant to support this project because of the outside design, especially from the view of the Shoreway.

@TBrancatelli is joining us from Florida & keeps losing his power. Why he’s hanging out in the middle of a hurricane, I have no clue. https://t.co/hF7eUnhgRH

All Commissioners approve the design submittal except Anderson. The group will continue to work with City Planning on recommendations for traffic studies & to re-visit the roof design.

The next project has a Concept Plan for review, a 6-unit apartment building on Ford Drive. https://t.co/hrIoMwWRit

This is a new proposed design. Your thoughts? https://t.co/dyRcDqKUnB

@jackbranca what’s your boy doin’ in Florida? Y’all didn’t tell him there was a storm comin’?!?! 😂💨

Beam is now reading a summary of Hessler residents’ comments on this Ford Drive property. She’ll follow with a staff report and the design committee’s review. https://t.co/0nbevdOQ5g

Commission Member Allan Dreyer opposes the Mansard roof. Ezra Koenig disagrees…

Anderson has praise for parts of the design but has concerns about only 6 allotted parking spots, 1 for each unit, though each unit is a 3-bedroom. https://t.co/OvBWGTrv5h

Huang wants to clarify if the concerns are conceptual and schematic or with the design. @TBrancatelli is explaining other discussions that will take place to ensure the building process does no harm to the area around it. https://t.co/E34zguPE6x

Commission member Bob Strickland suggests “divorcing” the design and the attachment to the Ford Drive property and match it more to the buildings on Hessler.

Commission member Jonathan Bonezzi says he hopes it’s helpful but thinks they should look at the project with fresh eyes, removing all the layers of conversation that have taken place & recognise that it is a new development.

Here’s what that space on Hessler Street looks like right now. https://t.co/lVjIdipGXw

The Concept Plan review for Ford Dr. ends with developers back at the drawing board with recommendations from the Commission to re-visit the design & resolve other schematic concerns.

Huang answers Strickland’s question, Commission meetings next year are expected to be in-person, but there will be other options. https://t.co/lh4lljVpfD
